Notes:
May be confused with the native, less common M. rubra. The leaves of M. alba tend to have a shinier appearance and are much more deeply lobed, although lobed leaves do occur on M. rubra. Also, the fruits of M. rubra are longer than those of M. alba. See Purdue University's comparison of the two species here (PDF format).

Notes:
Two subspecies of Symphoricarpos albus occur in Michigan. Symphoricarpos albus var. albus is a genotype native to Michigan. The other subspecies, Symphoricarpos albus var. laevigatus is native to the Pacific Northwest. The native subspecies may be distinguished by the pubescence of the leaves and young twigs. S. albus var. laevigatus, on the other hand, has glabrous leaves and twigs. See Michiganflora.net from more information.
